Description

The centrepiece of the project is a 17-storey patient care tower (250,000 GSF) at the corner of Queen and Victoria that connects the existing wings, creating a unified and more efficient hospital campus.  The tower will provide state-of-the-art facilities for programs now challenged by older spaces, including respirology, orthopedics, oncology and critical care.

Using evidence-based design and best practices, our new operating rooms, ambulatory units, imaging centres and patient rooms will all conform to the highest standards.  Creating spaces that are larger, brighter, quieter, with decentralized work stations, the new spaces will offer patients and their families’ greater comfort, and staff will be closer to their patients.  Our new main entrance, convenient and accessible, will welcome all with the utmost convenience and accessibility.

The new tower will allow for major upgrades (150,000 GSF) in the existing buildings on either side, with some existing units expanding directly into the tower itself.  This expansion will create a seamless and more efficient layout of services and connecting routes.  Changes include creating a new ambulatory centre on three floors of the adjacent wing to house programs like the Kidney Transplant, Urology, Neurosurgery and Orthopedic clinics.&nbsp Additional project objectives include the following:

Five new operating rooms, each big enough to include imaging equipment such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Computed Tomography (CT) scans, which are an essential element of modern surgery.  These “hybrid operating rooms” will allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive, image-guided or catheter-based procedures as well as undertake open surgery in the same Operating Room (OR) which ultimately increases patient safety and decreases operation times.  Enlarged, state-of-the art facilities for orthopedics, coronary care and respirology, and the medical/surgical intensive care unit.

The expanded best-in-class Emergency will be better able to serve the growing volume of patients in the most efficient and up-to-date fashion, improving care and reducing wait times.  We now experience 70,000 visits in a space designed to accommodate 45,000, with volumes continue to grow.  The redevelopment project will allow for more patient treatment areas, space for vital imaging equipment, a dedicated mental health area as well as an expanded rapid assessment zone – a special section for more efficient diagnosis and treatment of patients with less severe problems.  These changes will result in patients getting better care, experiencing shorter wait times and allowing for more privacy and greater comfort during their stay.

  • Ambulatory Care including an Infusions Centre and Clinics
  • Administrative Offices
  • Perioperative Services including Post Anesthetic Care Unit renovations
