Description

The project entailed the building and financing of three venues for the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games.  The project included:

Markham Pan Am Centre

The new Markham Pan Am Centre will host water polo and badminton competitions during the Games.  Following the Games, community residents of all ages will have access to the state-of-the-art facility including amenities such as the gymnasia, multi-purpose program areas, fitness and training facilities and an Olympic-size swimming pool.

The aquatics area features:

  • One 10-lane, 50 x 25 metre swimming pool
  • A moveable floor
  • Two – one metre movable bulkheads
  • 1,000 permanent fixed seats
  • 1,000 temporary seating

The field house includes:

  • 1,000 permanent retractable seats
  • 1,000 temporary seating
  • Approximately 34,000 square feet of flexible gymnasium space for training and competition

Etobicoke Olympium Pool

  • The existing Etobicoke Olympium is a multi-sport facility that includes an Olympic-size pool, a leisure pool, gymnasium and fitness centre with programs and services including gym activities, fitness and a range of aquatic activities.
  • During the Games, this venue will be a training site for aquatic disciplines including swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swimming.
  • This project included renovation and major improvement to the existing pool to meet Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) requirements, as well as much needed improvements to the mechanical and electrical systems.

The Pan American Field Hockey Centre

  • This development provides a key sport infrastructure to the community and assists in building the profile of field hockey in the province.
  • It is Ontario’s first dedicated international field hockey venue, including two competition fields meeting international specifications.
  • It is the centre of excellence for national and provincial teams as well it provides a dedicated site that will host all levels of the game from international events to local grass root leagues.
  • The two fields are located on the back campus of University of Toronto – St. George.
