Description

The municipal aquatic centre, constructed at Lester B. Pearson Park at Carlton Street and Niagara Street, is approximately 47,195 square feet and also includes an 7,007 square foot library branch.  The project emphasizes sustainable design and with an estimated additional cost of $637,000 it achieves LEED Silver Certification.

The municipal aquatics centre features a double pool design accommodating the needs of aquatics participants of all ages and abilities.  A 25 metre, eight lane, rectangular lap pool with ramp entry, and built-in poolside bleachers accommodating lane swimming, recreational swimming and lessons for intermediate to advanced swimmers.  An irregular leisure pool with both beach and ramp entry, splash pad and small child slide is set to warmer temperatures and accommodates the needs of senior citizens, children and family recreational activity, therapeutic classes and lessons for children and infants.

The double pool design offers significant advantages: the separation between tanks creates back up in the event of pool fouling or system failures; allows for separate temperature controls to accommodate recreational and novice swimmers as well as intermediate and competitive swimmers; and, nearly doubles opportunities for rentals and programming by creating clearly defined aquatic spaces tailored to different user groups.
