Description

The York Community Centre is strategically located adjacent to the Black Creek Ravine to provide much needed recreational programs to three economically and socially challenged neighbourhoods.  The program of the building includes an aquatics centre, gymnasium, fitness centre, pre-school room and multi-use rooms with associated ancillary and change room spaces.  The design team initiated a collaborative Town hall process to help the community shape the program.  The architectural design that resulted seeks to minimize the impact of the building on the adjacent flood plain, but capitalize on the natural ravine setting and its proximity to the urban context.  A series of pathways and large communal verandah invite pedestrian access across the site, while a compact parking area minimizes encroachment into the natural environment.  Great effort has been made to implement sustainable measures to reduce energy and water consumption, through the use of passive pool de-humidification systems, green roofs and various heat recovery systems.  The form of the building draws inspiration from traditional park pavilion structures asserting a strong presence through its distinctive roof from and innovative use of composite wood panels and coloured glazing.
