Project Description
Construction of a two-storey, 140,000 sq.ft. sports centre. The project involved the construction of a new 4,100 seat spectator facility, the demolition of the existing Sault Ste. Marie Memorial gardens facility and site improvements.
The facility is a cornerstone for economic revitalization in the City's downtown, a new home for the Soo Greyhounds and gathering spot for conventions, trade shows and entertainers. With seating surpassing 4,100 (with an ice surface), the City argues that there is not a bad view in the building. Standing room allows for another 500 spectators; whole concert capacity tops 6,500 spectators.
The facility is wheelchair accessible and 32 spots are reserved for wheelchair access on the top level for Soo Greyhound games.
The stained glass and relief sculptures were carefully removed and restored from the Memorial Gardens and incorporated in the Steelback Centre.
