Construction of the London Police Service new addition to their Dundas Street headquarters begins next month with a Concord, Ont., contractor getting the construction nod from the London Police Board.

The contract for the estimated $21 million project was awarding last week (Aug. 9) to Bondfield Construction, and the work is to start in early September, lasting an estimated 20 months.

The new addition is to include increased underground parking, two floors of office space, a new state-of-the-art firearms range, and two oversize garages to house specialty vehicles.

Police board officials said during the construction, there will be impacts to the daily activities of London Police Service members and visitors to the police station.

"The current visitor parking area along the west side of the building will no longer be available, and visitors will have to utilize the on-street parking along Dundas Street."

Additional parking is available at the municipal parking lots located on Queens Avenue, east of Adelaide Street, or on Marshall Street, just east of Adelaide Street.

The existing front entrance and headquarters desk at the police station will be operational for service and enquiries, during the entire construction period, board officials said.

"Although this project may cause some inconvenience to visitors, the end result will be a facility that allows the London Police Service to better serve the citizens of London."

The London Police Services Board is the civilian body responsible for governing the London Police Service. It is responsible for the provision of adequate and effective police services to the City of London's population of approximately 355,900.
