Peterborough Sports and Wellness Centre
Peterborough Sports and Wellness Centre
Developed in association with Stafford Haensli Architects, the Angus Glen Community Centre & Library is situated on a 12-hectare gently sloping site overlooking the Angus Glen Golf Course in Markham, Ontario. Encompassing a future regional park, twin pad arena, gymnasium, pool, library, and multi-purpose spaces for all ages within the community, Angus Glen Community Centre is designed in harmony with the strong natural landscape. The Centre utilizes the topography to showcase the varying volumes of the structure.

The two-year design process involved extensive consultation with the community and the Town Council as well as collaboration among a group of professionals including the Town's architect, a library consultant, and landscape architects. The building has been received in the community with great enthusiasm. Swimming programs, hockey leagues and community clubs have been scrambling for space. The library has attracted an incredible 11,000 users per week and has spawned an increase in activity at all Markham library branches, reflected in a fifty-five per cent overall growth in the system.

Developed in association with Trevelyan Architects, the Peterborough Sports and Wellness Centre is a landmark for the community and provides inspiring views of the distant rolling landscape. It features a broad and dramatic "gull wing" roof and a sun-lit main hall accentuated by coloured stucco and warm wood panels.

The Peterborough Sports and Wellness Centre houses an aquatic centre with two pool tanks, a fitness centre, three multipurpose rooms, a track, and aerobics facilities, in addition to a competitive gymnasium and a training gym with bleachers and change rooms. The building enables the community and Sir Sanford Fleming College to share program spaces while allowing separation during special events such as convocation.
