September 29, 2006 - The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) panel has awarded Shore Tilbe Irwin & Partners (http://www.stipartners.com) the 2006 Public & Institutional Spaces Award of Merit for the interior design of Whitby Library and Civic Square (http://www.whitbylibrary.on.ca/).

The ARIDO Awards annually recognize the outstanding work of its members through their Awards of Excellence Program.

Shore Tilbe & Irwin's Interior Design team, lead by Lena Otbo-Rozel and Elizabeth Livingston, along with architects D'Arcy Arthurs and Andrew Frontini attended the awards gala held in Toronto on September 28 at the CNE's Direct Energy Centre.

Having long outgrown a 16,000 square foot structure built in the early 1960s, The Whitby Public Library made a call for architectural services to redevelop its site in downtown Whitby. The architectural response centered around the creation of a coherent urban space with the holistic delivery of architectural and interior design services. The interior design for the Library was expressed through abstraction and restraint: broad graphic moves set in a neutral base palette, accents of colour and texture, with clear sightlines throughout the space.

A model of design for the modern library, the Whitby Library and Civic Square has become a downtown cultural destination for the Town of Whitby, with visitation and circulation figures soaring in the first year of operation.
