LOCAL WORKERS EXCITED ABOUT CONSTRUCTION JOB
AT WINDSOR REGIONAL HOSPITAL
Infrastructure Ontario and Windsor Regional Hospital announced the major capital Western Redevelopment Project in near June of this year with Bondfield Construction selected as successful bidder.
The Windsor Regional Hospital capital development project includes new construction to provide a 75,000 square foot specialized mental health hospital and renovations to more than 35,000 square feet of space in the Tower Building which houses inpatient rehabilitation services.
Bondfield Construction’s monthly manpower report (July 2009) indicated that up to 87% of its workforce is local labour on the site. Its (August, 2009) report is indicating the same level workforce made up of local carpenters, labourers, machine operators and mechanical/electrical workers from five union affiliations.
“I have worked all over the world from Russia and Germany however, being only 7 minutes from my home in LaSalle, I am happy to be working on this hospital project.” stated Albert Van Derhoek, Electrician.
“All of us carpenters and labourers are local and are happy about Bondfield getting the contract and hiring us.” said Justin Lussier, Lead Hand Carpenter from Windsor.
“I am pleased to be working on this job locally as it is only 10 minutes from my home and after having to work outside of Windsor for the last several years with long commutes, I couldn’t be happier.” stated Maria Motisi-Arthur, Project Coordinator and resident of LaSalle.
“I have had relatives stay in this hospital on the Western Campus and it is good to be working here and giving back.” said Glenn Gault, Electrical/Mechanical Project Manager and Windsor resident.
At the time of the announcement of the project, it was confirmed that at the peak of construction, there will be approximately 220 workers on site daily. Local labour will account for approximately 80% of the workforce with approximately 500,000 hours of local labour involved over the lifespan of the project.
“I am pleased that John Aquino of Bondfield Construction is following through on his commitment to provide a majority of workers on the construction site with local labour from Windsor and area” stated David Musyj, President and CEO, Windsor Regional Hospital.
As a result of all work at the Western Campus, it will result in 430 more beds for the Windsor/Essex County and approximately 530 more healthcare jobs created in the community.
