York Central expansion ready to go

Concord-based Bondfield Construction will build York Central Hospital's phase one redevelopment project.
The winning bid for the $66.9 million construction contract was announced yesterday by hospital president and CEO Bruce Harber.

"Not only was Bondfield's tender bid extremely competitive, but their ambitious timeline will allow us to fast track construction so that we can fully realize the benefits of phase one in just under three years," Mr. Harber said.

The bid has been approved by the Ministry of Health and Long Term-Care, which has committed $55.5 million for the $93.2-million first phase, including construction, furnishings and medical equipment.

The rest of the funding will come from the Town of Richmond Hill and the hospital's foundation.

Construction will start early next year.

Bondfield will immediately begin preparing the hospital site for construction.

Trailers and security fences are already on site.

A construction tower crane will be in place by January.

When completed, the expansion program will triple the hospital's emergency and diagnostic imaging departments, double its critical care unit and create a new birthing centre.

A total of 93 new beds will be added to a new acute care department, increasing the total number of inpatient beds to 512.

Included in the project are negative pressure isolation rooms for highly infectious patients and six new beds for an expanded mental health facility.

Larger fracture, plastics and ophthalmology capabilities, new medical staff facilities and an auditorium are part of the 148,230 square-foot first phase.
